Due to all the rain we have had, we have not been able to get in the fields to plant much. We did get onion seed in, but they will not be ready for awhile. We are currently trying to plant strawberry plants. We got 300 in and they are doing well, even blooming. We have 400 more to plant as soon as the weather cooperates. We will post what is available and also be sending emails to those who request to be on the list. Just email Donna at the right and ask to be put on the email list. We are still selling ice cream as we can. If the demand keeps up we will sell it during the winter also. We thank you all for your interest and business during the year. We appreciate it very much.

New Concession Trailer

Oleo Farm will be closed August 23 until September 15 for maintenance and fall planting. The Sentinel and Red Globe were some of the first to ripen. People have enjoyed gathering the larger peaches, and we still have smaller ones on the tree, which we feel can be offered to you at half price, which is $1.00 a pound. The quality of the small peaches equals that of the larger ones and they are even sweeter, due to the fact that they have remained on the tree longer. We are offering the small peaches at half-price this Saturday, July 11, all day, and Sunday, July 12, 12 pm to 4 pm. We are now gathering the Bounty peach, which is a large peach with great taste. It is a freestone peach.

Jim will be getting a load of cantaloupe on Wednesday, July 8, but they go very fast as they are very good and sweet. Hopefully our own cantaloupe will be coming off in a couple of weeks.

We thank you for patronizing us. We are enjoying having people come to the farm from all over the metroplex area due to the lack of peaches in Fredericksburg and Weatherford.

Donna Smith

New Produce Ready

The apricots have gone by now. We now have peaches, carrots, beets, Texas sweet 10-15 onions, summer squash, green beans, and corn. A few ripe tomatoes can sometimes be found. The best time to pick is in the morning, since it gets hot in the afternoons.

The orchard to the south of the house (directly in front, by the road) has been grown using conventional methods. The orchard (except for the white peaches) to the west of the house and the vegetables have been grown primarily using the organic method.

Remember, if we are not at the farm, you are welcome to gather your own produce. Instructions are on the front porch. We are normally here from 9 am to 4:30 pm, but you are welcome to come at a convenient time for you and practice the honor system. Notice the pictures and see that things are in full swing with peach and apricot trees in full bloom. Cool crops such as onions, spinach, beets and peas have been planted and are beginning to come up.

The cone shape in front of the peach tree in the picture may look like a space ship, but it is actually a pyramid trap to help monitor the plum curculio and let us know when they are around. That is the little bug that turns into the worms (protein) in the peaches as they ripen. Bumblebees have been brought in to help pollinate the fruit and vegetables.

In order to stay up with requests for homemade ice cream we have purchased a five-gallon ice cream freezer. Look for it in the afternoons on Hwy. 377 in downtown Tolar during spring break, March 18-21, if the weather is warm.

We are glad to invest in products that give us better produce. We are constantly trying to improve our organic methods.

Thanks for contacting our website. Stay in touch for news of fresh vegetables as they mature. Fresh produce is our aim. Spring is just around the corner. Be sure and remind us of the fruit and vegetables that you especially like and would like for us to provide for you. We are selecting seed at this time and hopefully in one week we will order it, so please get your orders in as soon as possible. We will be planting additional fruit trees in February. The ground has already been prepared. New things will be happening at the Oleo Farm. We plan on providing jams, jellies and salsas, and other items such as lye soap. Due to the inability to keep up with the demand for homemade ice cream last summer we have ordered a larger ice cream freezer similar to this one, except ours will be mounted on a wagon and be driven by an electric motor.

We were able to find more peaches in East Texas, plus blueberries, cantaloupe, and shelled black eyed peas. They are as scarce as hen's teeth, so we could only get a limited amount and when they are gone we don't know if we can get more or not. One grower said this week would be her last week to have any. The peaches we got are Bounty and Red Globe. We still have some 1015 onions. Weather permitting we will soon start some fall vegetables.

Fruit and Vegetables for the Summer

Mother Nature has not been kind to us this year. The wind, birds, and insects have decreased our production of peaches. The hot weather affected the tomatoes. We planted three long rows of tomatoes but, due to the weather, it has been difficult to keep up with the demand for good tomatoes. Please check with us from time to time. We do have 1015 onions. We will have future crops of watermelons, cantaloupe, okra and black-eyed peas during the summer. We will start our fall garden planting within a couple of weeks. If you have a wish list of vegetables for the fall, please email it to us as soon as possible.

We have located some peaches in East Texas that we can bring in and sell. They would run $35 to $40 for a half-bushel, depending on freight. Please call 817-894-1520 or 254-835-4666 or email us very soon if you would be interested in these.

First Produce of the Year

The first produce of the year is now ready which includes Detroit Red beets, Mama cabbage, sweet English peas, and carrots. Spring garden catalogs are coming daily in the mail which means it is time to begin thinking about your garden, or perhaps what you would like for us to grow for you here at the Oleo Farm. Take time to send us an email of what you would like to taste that is good, fresh, and vine-ripened. Remember, our goal is to use only organics, never harsh poisons, on our farm.

It is time to prune. We are taking advantage of the mild weather, when it occurs, and are pruning trees. Since we have over 200 trees we must begin this task early in the year. We will start spraying soon to prevent fungus and to destroy any insect eggs left on the trees.

New trees have arrived and more will be coming. Fig trees have been planted and we will soon be setting out cherry, pomegranate, and apricot trees.

In the above picture you see Jim laying up rows for vegetables. Some seeds have been ordered and spinach, cabbage and onion seeds have already been planted. Onion sets have also been set out. Fertilizer has been ordered and a better sprayer has been purchased. We have installed an automatic watering system for the fruit trees and irrigation supplies for the vegetables have been ordered. I will be communicating with our farm suppliers in order to learn better ways to grow healthier fruit and vegetables.

You can see that the first part of the years has been busy. For relaxing on the extremely cold days we have been building bird feeders and Blue Bird houses. We will have enough to sell if you are interested.

How would you like to have a juicy peach, apricot or ripe tomato? We will do our best to provide it for you.

Bird Feeders

Here are two of the bird feeders Jim has been working on during the cold weather. Our children have always wanted to be home on Thanksgiving and this year was no exception. We continued the tradition with cornbread dressing, baked turkey, sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, homemade yeast rolls, gravy, fruit salad, cranberries, pumpkin roll, and everyone's favorite pie (three different kinds!). Thanksgiving is our special time to renew relationships, share new ideas with each other, and just have a good time. The grandchildren love the open space that gives them room to ride the toy jeep, swing, fish and ride the tractors with PaPa.

With November coming to a close and the end of the year approaching, it will soon be time to start preparing for the spring. Dream about the fruit and vegetables you would like for us to grow in 2008 and let us hear from you. We wish you all a happy Holiday Season.

Thanks to all who have visited our farm. Please pass this website on to your friends.

Jim and Donna Smith
